Our story begins where you are

Darkhorse founder Dan Garzella started his career at age 23 as a scratch agent for Farmers Insurance. Within 10 years, he was recognized among the top 1/2% of more than 15,000 agents. However, the successes were starting to ring hollow. Even though the model provided a vital launching point, it had its limitations.

Weighing the options

Dan had three options. The first option was to conform to the Farmers’ business model, let go of most of his employees and grow his company by acquiring smaller agencies. This was the safest and most stable option, but it wasn’t an exciting one.

The other option was to sell his agency back to Farmers and either buy an existing independent insurance brokerage or start his own from scratch. He quickly found out during this process that every agency is very different and none would pan out.

Dan’s final option was the one that had the most risk. Start over from ZERO with the hope that he would write enough premium before the money ran out. This option fulfilled all of his goals, the commitments to his team and his clients. All at the same time, he ran the risk of failure and losing everything he had spent 10 years building.
